2018 A Year Of Aggressive Ministry!
“But the word of God grew and multiplied.” – Acts 12:24 (context: verses 1-24)
“So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed.” – Acts 19:20 (context: verses 11-20)
I recently received a letter from Ligonier Ministries, written by the ministry Founder and Chairman, R.C. Sproul. It was a letter of encouragement to supporters of the ministry. It states that “The year 2017 was monumental for Ligonier.” This statement precedes a list of precedent-setting accomplishments. For these we are thankful.
But consider with me the opening three paragraphs of this letter:
The world appears to be in upheaval. Headlines proclaim discord and strife in our nation. Shapers of culture want to remake reality, to force us to call evil good and good evil.
I Believe God allows these unsettled times to drive people to Christ, who alone grants true peace, meaning, and reconciliation. More people have reached out to Ligonier Ministries this year than ever before, searching for something eternal to hold on to.
Dr. Sproul’s brief overview of the state of our world can be upsetting. This world is experiencing upheaval, discord, and strife.
The “shapers” of this world “professing to be wise” have become fools, in the biblical sense. God has abandoned these shapers, and the world they are shaping; to uncleanness, dishonor among themselves, and the normalizing of vile passions. They have abandoned the rationale of the creative design for the passions of a debased mind.
Times like these do drive those who will be righteous to seek the Lord. To find refuge, life, and answers in Him.
Hear the Prophet Habakkuk’s plea:
“O Lord, how long shall I cry, And You will not hear? Even cry out to You, “Violence!” And You will not save. Why do You show me iniquity, And cause me to see trouble? For plundering and violence are before me; There is strife, and contention arises. Therefore the law is powerless, And justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous; Therefore perverse judgment proceeds.” – Habakkuk 1:2-4
Technology and access amplify the wickedness of our times, but in kind, that wickedness is not new. What Habakkuk decried is what we decry today. And the answer of the Lord remains the same.
Today people everywhere are reaching out for answers, solutions, and help. And that help must be found in Christ.
I agree with Dr. Sproul, that we can seize the moment for the gospel. Yes, the soul of the proud “is not upright in him.” And he will perish in his pursuits.
“But the just shall live by his faith.” – Habakkuk 2:4
In times like these, our task is clear:
“Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.” – 2 Timothy 4:2
Let’s except Dr. Sproul’s encouragement. Like the saints of renown throughout the centuries of the Church, let’s go everywhere preaching the word with fresh initiative!
The Lord has set this thing up for us. Let’s knock it out of the park! (in a figure of speech)
